Our littlest family member met sand for the first time this week. It reminded me of this phrase from Richard Louv’s bestseller, “The Last Child in the Woods.”
“…nature gives itself to children – for its own sake, not as a reflection of a culture.”
The sand gave itself up to her little hands, offering a sense of wonder, independence, sensorial gifts and delight. It asked nothing in return. The sand was hers to play with in whatever way she wanted. There was no ulterior motive. Just the world offering itself to a child in play.
